History from the Tanzanian Perspective:
In 2015, the United Nations Member States collectively embraced the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, marking a pivotal moment in global cooperation towards achieving peace and prosperity for present and future generations. At the core of this agenda lie the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a clarion call for action that transcends borders, urging both developed and developing nations to collaborate in addressing pressing global challenges.
For Tanzania, this commitment to sustainable development resonates deeply, reflecting our nation's ongoing efforts to uplift communities while safeguarding our natural environment. Building upon a rich history of engagement with global initiatives, Tanzania joined more than 178 nations in adopting Agenda 21 during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. This comprehensive plan underscored the importance of forging a global partnership to advance sustainable development, laying the groundwork for future endeavors.
The Millennium Summit in 2000 marked another milestone as Member States unanimously endorsed the Millennium Declaration, setting forth eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) aimed at alleviating extreme poverty by 2015. Tanzania embraced this collective vision, aligning national strategies with the MDGs to foster inclusive growth and enhance human development.
The 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg reaffirmed Tanzania's commitment to poverty eradication and environmental stewardship. By emphasizing multilateral partnerships and building upon the principles outlined in Agenda 21 and the Millennium Declaration, this summit reinforced Tanzania's dedication to sustainable development.
The Rio+20 Conference in 2012 further galvanized global efforts, leading to the adoption of "The Future We Want" document, which laid the groundwork for the SDGs. Tanzania actively participated in this process, recognizing the importance of shaping a shared agenda that addresses the interconnected challenges facing humanity.
In 2013, the General Assembly established an Open Working Group to develop proposals for the SDGs, underscoring the inclusive nature of the agenda-setting process. Tanzania's engagement in these deliberations reflected its commitment to shaping a sustainable future for all.
The culmination of these efforts came in September 2015, when the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit witnessed the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. With its 17 SDGs serving as a roadmap for collective action, this historic moment underscored Tanzania's resolve to pursue sustainable development in partnership with the global community.
In subsequent years, Tanzania has remained actively engaged in the implementation and review of the SDGs, recognizing the importance of sustained commitment and collaboration. The annual High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development provides a vital platform for monitoring progress and exchanging best practices, ensuring that Tanzania remains on course towards realizing the vision of the 2030 Agenda.
Today, the Division for Sustainable Development Goals within the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs plays a pivotal role in supporting Tanzania's efforts to achieve the SDGs. By providing substantive support, capacity-building, and fostering partnerships, the Division enables Tanzania to translate its commitment to sustainable development into tangible action.
As Tanzania strives to realize the 2030 Agenda, broad ownership of the SDGs must be accompanied by a steadfast commitment from all stakeholders. Through concerted efforts and collective action, Tanzania remains steadfast in its determination to build a sustainable future for current and future generations, in harmony with the global community
